August in the UK garden is peak ‘things are exploding’ season — which is great until you realise you’ve got 47 courgettes and no plan. Here are the real, doable jobs for messy gardeners (no perfection required).

The proper August jobs (messy-gardener edition)

  • Pick courgettes small every day or they turn to marrows. Grate extras and freeze.

  • Feed tomatoes twice a week with tomato feed. Remove lower leaves for airflow to help stop blight.

  • Keep picking runner beans and French beans every 2 days.

  • Sow quick crops for September: lettuce, radish, spring onions, spinach (direct sow).

  • Pick blackberries and raspberries. Freeze on a tray first, then bag up. Cut out old raspberry canes.

  • Do 10 minutes of weeding a day — don’t try to do the whole plot in one go.

  • Water pots daily in the evening.

If you only do one thing: keep picking. It’s the difference between ‘nice harvest’ and ‘help, it’s taken over the garden’.
