The Messy Gardener
Proper gardening for people who kill houseplants.
Right, I’m Digger Dave, The Messy Gardener I grow fruit, veg, and flowers in Tonbridge, Kent. And I make a proper mess doing it.
I’ve flooded my greenhouse, snapped tomato plants in half, drowned my first potatoes, and once grew a courgette the size of a canoe. Still got fed, though. And that’s the point.
I’m not a pro gardener. I don’t own a potting shed or a posh Latin plant book. I’m just a bloke with an allotment who’d rather eat a wonky carrot I grew than a perfect one from Tesco.
You’ll also find me on Facebook as Digger Dave – The Messy Gardener. That’s where I started, sharing what was actually happening on the plot – the wins, the bolting lettuce, the tomato jungles.
Why The Messy Gardener?
Because you told me you:
Want to grow your own but think you’re “rubbish at it”
Don’t own a potting shed or a posh Latin plant book
Would rather eat something you grew, even if it’s wonky, than buy the perfect plastic version
That was me. Still is me, most days.
So I started writing down what I wish someone had told me at the start. No jargon. No “utilise”. Just rough and ready growing tips for gardeners in the UK & Ireland that actually work.
What you’ll find here:
🥔 Beginner gardening tips that actually work, How to grow potatoes in bags or in the ground, how to stop everything bolting, the lazy compost fix. The stuff I learned after killing every potato I touched until... well, you know the story.
🍅 Recipes from the patch What to do when you’ve got 47 tomatoes and no clue. Spoiler: soup. Plus how to deal with a canoe-sized courgette and runner beans you can’t see over.
🎁 Gardener’s Gift Hampers – (Hopefully) Coming Soon Seed packs, tools, and grubby notes from me. For mates who think they can’t grow stuff.
📅 Seasonal Guides What to sow, plant, and do now in South East England. Like what to do in August when everything wants to bolt, croak, or bury you in courgettes.
New here? Start with this:
Read “How to Grow Potatoes: In Bags or In the Ground, Dave’s Belt-and-Braces Method” – my most popular blog. 53 people have read it so far. If I can grow spuds after drowning the first lot, you can.
The important bit:
This site is for messy gardeners. Posh gardeners are welcome too, but you’ll get muddy. 👨🌾
I’m taking a couple of days off right now to make proper plans for the plot – back in 2 days with August jobs. After that, one email when there’s something worth reading: what to plant now, what’s eating your veg, and permission to ignore the ‘rules’. Join 500+ messy gardeners if you fancy it.
Questions? Stuck on something?
Email me: dave@themessygardener.co.uk – proper human replies, no bots.
I read every email. Especially if you’ve got a wonky carrot photo.
Dave
